The German coalition has agreed on increased investments in families’ preliminary deal in the 2025 and 2026 national budget, including a significant increase in spending on children’s welfare, government sources said.

After lengthy household negotiations, the “emergency child allowance for families in need will rise by five euros ($5.40)’’ in 2025.

The government plans to invest two billion euros in improving the quality of daycare centres over the next two years and maintain support for voluntary childcare services.

However, the budget for voluntary services was to remain at the same level as the providers called it back up to the end of 2023.

Government sources said that Family Minister Lisa Paus and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck of the Greens were satisfied with the outcome.

According to the sources, this will protect more spending on child welfare despite the savings targets announced by Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP).

Ms Lindner, Mr Habeck, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) reached a preliminary deal on the 2025 national budget and a financial plan on Friday.

There is a strong family package with financial support for children and families at risk, while significant investments are also being made in kindergarten quality.

This would be to encourage growth in Germany after weeks of difficult negotiations.
