The companies said the disruption in the gas supply chain from Nigeria is due to maintenance works being carried out by Ghana’s gas supplier.

Ghana will undergo a three-week power supply disruption across many areas due to a reduction in the supply of gas from Nigeria, the Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced.

“We wish to inform the public that due to reduction of gas supply from Nigeria since Wednesday 12th June, 2024 some areas across the country have experienced interruption in power supply,” GRIDCo and ECG said in a joint statement on Thursday.

The companies said the disruption in the gas supply chain from Nigeria is due to maintenance works being carried out by Ghana’s gas supplier, The West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAPCo), on its facilities. The maintenance is expected to last three weeks.

“The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAP Co), in a statement, has explained that the reduction in gas supply was due to maintenance works being undertaken by a gas supplier in Nigeria and is projected to last three (3) weeks,” the statement said.

“The maintenance has caused a reduction in overall power generation capacity in Ghana which could result in load management over the period of the work.”

GRIDCo and ECG noted that everything is being done with relevant stakeholders to ensure equal distribution of available power across Ghana during the period.

“GRIDCo and ECG, however, wish to assure the public that we are collaborating with other stakeholders in the power value chain to optimise available resources to ensure minimal impact of the reduction in gas supply on consumers.”
