Ghana on brink of AFCON exit, squander two-lead in stoppage time

Ghana’s fate hangs in the balance.

For the second consecutive time, Ghana’s Black Stars are set to crash out in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations after they threw away a two-goal lead in stoppage time to settle for a draw against Mozambique.

Jordan Ayew had given Ghana the lead from the spot just 15 minutes into the final Group B match before doubling the scoreline from the spot again in the 70th minute.

But everything changed inside seven minutes of added time.

Geny Catamo pulled a goal back for Mozambique from the spot before Reinildo scored Mozambique’s second to complete the comeback.

Ghana finished third in the group with two points, same as Mozambique but the former have a better goal difference while Cape Verde and Egypt advanced to the next phase of the competition from Group B.

Cape Verde and Egypt played an entertaining 2-2 draw in the second Group B match. Gilson Tavares gave Cape Verde the lead with a sweet finish inside Egypt’s box just before halftime.

However, Trezeguet equalised for Egypt four minutes after the break. In the 90th minute, Mostafa Mohamed put the Pharoachs ahead for the first time in the game but the unrelenting Cape Vardeans equalised late on in the game through Bryan Teixeira.

Cape Verde finished top of the group with seven points, four points ahead of second-placed Egypt.
