Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State on Monday identified collective action and support for security agencies as crucial in addressing the national security challenges.

Mr Aliyu, in his New Year message signed by his press secretary, Abubakar Bawa, acknowledged the challenges, particularly the insecurity that hindered the nation’s economic progress.

The governor also expressed concerns about frequent bandit attacks in the state resulting in casualties, displacement, and abductions of people.

He identified armed banditry as the most pressing issue in the northern states, urging prompt attention from all levels of government.

“However, it is clear that we have made significant progress in the fight against banditry within our seven-month-old administration.

“This is following our collective efforts with the security agencies, and we have been able to successfully rescue over 100 kidnapped victims due to sustained support for the military.

“More so, I want to assure the residents that we are on track and we will continue to fulfil our pledge towards ensuring a secured and habitable environment for all,” he said.

Mr Aliyu restated the procurement and distribution of 70 patrol vehicles to enhance the security capabilities of the personnel and the establishment of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps to complement existing security measures.

He, therefore, appealed for support from citizens and hoped for an end to security challenges in 2024.

Mr Aliyu called for prayers for the nation’s leaders and wished Nigerians a prosperous New Year.
