On Tuesday, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State signed the Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) Teaching Hospital Bill into law.

SUMAS, built by the former governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, is located at Igboeno in the Udenu Council Areas of the state.

Speaking at the event in Enugu, Mr Mbah promised to expedite action to actualise the immediate takeoff of the teaching hospital.

He said the hospital would provide quality training and healthcare services in the Enugu North senatorial zone and the state in general.

Mr Mbah commended the Enugu State House of Assembly for accelerating action on the processing and passage of the executive bill, adding that the establishment of SUMAS Teaching Hospital was in line with his manifesto.

“By signing into law the Enugu SUMAS Teaching Hospital Bill, we have established a legal framework to immediately begin implementing all that is required to upgrade SUMAS to a teaching hospital,” the governor said.

He assured the governing council and SUMAS management of his continued support, adding that his administration would equally count on their pedigree and contacts to bring the teaching hospital to fruition in record time.

“We will continue to support you and count on your experience, network, and profile to raise resources to actualise the project.

“This year alone, we are going to spend 33 per cent of our budget on education. This underscores the importance of education to this administration,” said Mr Mbah.

On his part, the Enugu State House of Assembly speaker, Uchenna Ugwu, commended Mr Mbah’s speed and faithfulness in delivering on his campaign promises.

He assured that the House of Assembly was always ready to fast-track every executive bill that would positively impact the state and its people.
