A former head of state of Nigeria, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), has commended Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe for his remarkable achievements and commitment to the welfare and progress of his people and Nigeria as a whole.

Mr Gowon gave the commendation when he led a delegation of some eminent Nigerians, including Gov. Caleb Muftwang of Plateau, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, a former minister of information, Jerry Gana, amongst others, on a courtesy call on Mr Yahaya, on Saturday in Gombe.

The elder statesman said the visible strides made by Mr Yahaya’s administration were a testament of the governor’s steadfast commitment to effecting positive change.

Mr Gowon further acknowledged that Mr Yahaya’s leadership was making tangible impacts on the lives of the people of the state through laudable initiatives and projects that were visible to all.

“I may not have the chance to personally witness the transformation taking place under your leadership in Gombe, but I must commend you for your remarkable strides in governance.

“It’s been quite some time since my last visit to Gombe, and I must acknowledge the evident change.

” The improvements I have observed are so significant that I find myself unable to recognise certain places from my previous visit.

“Your Excellency, let me commend you for your efforts and urge you to continue the excellent work you are doing.

“We are closely observing the positive transformations taking place in Gombe, and you are certainly making us proud.

“Your genuine care for the welfare of your people, as well as the development and progress of your state and the nation, is highly commendable.

“I extend my best wishes to you for continued success throughout your tenure,” Mr Gowon added.

Speaking earlier, Mr Yahaya described the visit as an honour done not just to his administration, but to the entire people of Gombe, emphasising the hospitable nature of the people of the State.

He noted that gracing the commissioning of the church by the former head of state and other distinguished Nigerians could not have come at a better time as it coincided with the Muslims’ Ramadan fast and some Christians observing the Lenten period.

“Let us utilise this occasion by spreading the Gospel of peace. Nigeria is currently facing challenges, and there’s no reason for us to be in this situation.

“We are one people, and your message of unity, Your Excellency Gen. Gowon, resonates with us. We are a people of faith, and during the challenging days of the Nigerian civil war, you stood with us.

“Now you consistently serve the nation in various capacities, notably through initiatives like the Nigeria Prays, among others. We shall continue to stand together with you for peace and unity of Nigeria,” Mr Yahaya said.

The delegation was in Gombe state for the dedication of a church in Shongom Local Government Area, built by an illustrious son, Jerry Damara, for his community.
