The Useful Youth Vision Concepts (UYVC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has advised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to enhance security at borders and airports to prevent illicit drug trafficking.

The UYVC founder, Adetokunbo Shonibare-Ayantunji, told journalists on Saturday in Abeokuta while reacting to the spate of illicit drug trafficking.

According to a report released recently by NDLEA on drug abuse and illicit trafficking, it ranked Ogun high among other states.

The report noted that the conviction of about 86 illicit drug dealers was secured from January to May 2024, apart from the quantity of drugs withdrawn from circulation in the state.

According to Mrs Shonibare-Ayantunji, the uncontrolled penetration of illicit drugs depicts the reason for the criminalities recorded in the state.

”The recent among such repeatedly criminalities took place on June 30 when travellers were abducted on Sagamu/Ijebu-Ode Expressway, besides heists.

“These are just a few of numerous illicit drugs added criminalities in the country,” she said.

Mrs Shonibare-Ayantunji urged the Ogun command of the anti-narcotic agency to enhance security at borders and airports to prevent drug trafficking.

She also called for increasing partnerships with border states and airports to prevent barons from using the state as hideout.

Other solutions suggested by the NGO founder included intelligence gathering and surveillance to identify and disrupt drug trafficking networks.

“Interdiction by conducting raids, seizures and arrests to disrupt drug supply chains,” she said.
