Gunmen on Wednesday threw explosives into the Ihiala police divisional headquarters, setting the building alight, as attacks on public assets show no sign of abating in the South-East.

Police spokesman in Anambra, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack but said the assailants were promptly repelled.

One abandoned AK-47 rifle was recovered during a gun battle, Mr Ikenga disclosed in a statement on Wednesday.

“The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives although no casualty was recorded,” he police spokesman said.

“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station had already ignited fire that affected the building.”

Mr Ikenga assured that security operations were still ongoing in the area, promising that further details would be communicated to the public.
