The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on the Abia government and security agencies to redouble their efforts in securing the release of a medical doctor, Uwadinachi Iweha.
A statement on Monday by the association’s president, Uche Ojinmah in Abuja, condemned the kidnap.

Seventy-four-year-old Iweha, a former chief medical director of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) Aba, was kidnapped in front of his house in Umuajameze Umuopara in Umuahia South local government area on June 6.

Mr Ojinmah urged the inspector general of police to create a deliberate policy to prevent the kidnap of medical doctors, other health care workers and their families to stop brain drain in Nigeria.

“We call on the kidnappers to search their conscience and see if it is right to keep in forced captivity an elder that has spent most of his life in the service of humanity,” said the NMA statement.

It added, “The Nigerian Medical Association is looking forward to receiving the news of the safe release of Dr Iweha. We shall not take kindly to any more waste of scarce medical skills.”
