Gunmen attacked Yarbulutu village market in Sokoto on Monday, killing three police officers and three traders while President Muhammadu Buhari was on a working visit to the state to attend a military event.

Mr Buhari and defence minister Salihi Magashi were attending the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference at the International Conference Centre, Kasarawa, in Sokoto.

Witnesses said the gunmen stormed the village on bikes and opened fire on innocent traders in the market.

Upon hearing the distress call, cops at a nearby checkpoint moved swiftly to repel the attacks but were overpowered by the assailants, who killed three officers and set their vehicles ablaze.

Police spokesperson in Sokoto, Sanusi Abubakar, confirmed the incident. According to him, the command is trying to apprehend the gunmen.
