Handball: National U-18 female team set to begin training ahead championship

Nigeria’s U-18 women’s handball team are set to begin preparation ahead of the IHF Challenge Trophy Africa Zone 3 beginning in Ghana from April 11 to 15.

Cosmos Chukwuemeka, the media representative for the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), made this known in a statement in Lagos on Saturday.

According to the statement, the training camp is set for Lagos, ahead of the Challenge Trophy for Africa Zone 3 phase, comprising 30 players across the federation.

The statement also reported that the competition would serve as a qualification for the Women’s IHF Trophy Africa Continental, holding later in the year.

To this end, coach Agboola Shittu Adewunmi has invited 30 players to camp at the Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba, Lagos, ahead of the championship.

Some players are mostly those who participated at the National under 12/15 Handball Championship in Sokoto and a few in various handball academies nationwide.

Coach Shittu believes he has gotten all the best players in the under-18 category and will ensure they get the necessary match tactical fitness ahead of the competition.

The players will report to the Rowe Park Sports Centre on Sunday evening.

The players invited for the Challenge Trophy Africa Zone 3 are Precious Samuel, Chidera Ogwusimba, Prudence Samuel, and Amina Mohammed, all from teams based in Sokoto.

Mary Olaoye, Munira Kasimu, Lucy Onyekwere, Monica Opara, Munira Mohammed, Timileyin Ogunwole and Damilola Adebisi are also from teams in Sokoto.

Akinola Temilade, Okosi Destiny, and Ogunsakin Toyin from teams in Ekiti.

Elizabeth Gift, Maureen John, Blessing Jumbo, and Vera John are from teams based in Bayelsa.

Similarly, Akinlade Damilola, Nestor Abigail, and Balogun Zainab are from Mindscoe Academy, just as Grace Gregory and Blessing Inyang are from Akwa Ibom.

Taiwo Babatunde, Kehinde Babatunde and Mathew Esther are from Seasider Babes.

The other players, Okolo Joan and Igbinedion Blessing, are from Delta. Aparaugo Amarachi is from Imo Grasshoppers.

The officials are Agboola Shittu Adewunmi, Opuene Robert and Abdullahi Suleiman.
