Another volcanic eruption could be brewing in Iceland, with a warning by the national weather authority that the probability of another eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula had increased.

It said on Friday that the volcanic eruption could happen in the next two weeks or even in a matter of days.

It was only in mid-January when there was a violent eruption on the peninsula southwest of Reykjavik, in which glowing red lava flowed out of elongated cracks in the earth.

For the first time in almost half a century, houses in Iceland were destroyed by lava.

According to the weather authority, calculation models based on GPS data indicate that an estimated 6.5 million cubic metres of magma has accumulated below the Svartsengi area.

The magma will soon reach the same volume as last month’s eruption.

A considerable danger continued to apply to the town of Grindavík, which was already evacuated in mid-January.
