The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has called on all parties involved in the conflict in Sudan to end hostilities.

IGAD also urged all warring parties to sheath their swords and prioritise negotiated political settlements.

The executive secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu, made the call in a statement on Monday to mark the first anniversary of the protracted conflict in Sudan.

According to him, all belligerent parties must immediately halt hostilities and pursue negotiated political settlements.

Mr Gebeyehu underscored the need for stakeholders to redouble efforts to tackle Sudan’s dire humanitarian situation and pervasive human suffering.

“This is by recognising the consequential ramifications of the conflict on the stability of Sudan and the broader region. The enduring conflict spanning over 12 months has inflicted untold suffering upon millions of Sudanese citizens, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis,” Mr Gebeyehu said.

He urged all stakeholders to work closely with IGAD and its designated Special Envoy to secure a nationwide cessation of hostilities.

The IGAD chief also said doing so would ensure a sustainable ceasefire and implementation of humanitarian measures to alleviate the human suffering in the country.

“It is imperative to initiate an inclusive Sudanese-led political process, a political settlement stands as the sole viable channel to achieve comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the Sudan conflict.

“IGAD affirms its unwavering commitment to collaborating with the African Union, neighbouring countries and our pertinent Sudanese stakeholders in pursuit of enduring peace and stability,” he added.
