Impeachment: Rivers assembly moves to remove Governor Fubara

Amid a reignited political rift with his estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated proceedings to remove Governor Siminalayi from office.
Speaker of the assembly, Martins Amaewhule, presided over the plenary to remove Mr Fubara as governor in televised proceedings on Thursday.
The majority leader, Major Jack, initiated the move by citing Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution and reeling out seven allegations of gross misconduct against Mr Fubara.
Among the allegations are Mr Fubara’s refusal to comply with the Supreme Court on the issue of the Assembly’s financial autonomy, the demolition of the parliament’s complex, withholding funds intended for the Assembly Service Commission, and extra-budgetary spending.
In March 2025, the lawmakers plotted to remove Mr Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu by issuing a notice of alleged gross misconduct against them.
