On Wednesday, Indonesia’s General Election Commission declared Prabowo Subianto the eighth president of the country.

The result was declared after the constitutional court rejected the appeals of two defeated presidential candidates regarding a dispute over the February presidential polls.

KPU chairman Hasyim Asy’ari announced that Mr Prabowo and his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, had been selected as president and vice president.

They are to rule from 2024 until 2029, with around 96 million or nearly 59 per cent of the total votes.

Messrs Prabowo and Gibran defeated the Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar pair, which received around 41 million votes, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD, which obtained around 27 million votes.

Mr Prabowo, currently the Southeast Asian country’s defence minister, will be inaugurated on October 20 this year.
