The Ondo House of Assembly has asked Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to strengthen Amotekun Corp in fighting criminals.

The speaker, Olamide Oladiji, made the call after deliberation on a matter of public interest by the assembly on Thursday.

He urged Mr Aiyedatiwa to provide the logistics needed and sufficient funds for Amotekun’s activities to protect lives and property.

The speaker, who read the resolution after the deliberation harped on the killing of two farmers in the Akoko area, said that it was disheartening that suspected herdsmen killed innocent farmers.

According to him, the incident is not a welcome development because the state is well known for peace. He explained that as representatives of the people of Ondo, the members of the parliament could not fold their  arms but proffer solutions that would tame crime.

Mr Oladiji, who passed a vote of confidence on the corps, said there should be a unit of forest ranger forces in the  corps that would comb all forests across the state.

He asked  other sister security  agencies to collaborate with the Amotekun Corps to save lives and property, asking residents to give useful information to security agencies.

The speaker said that the parliament would continue to support the Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in his determination to guarantee safety of lives and property.

Earlier, Raymond Daodu (Akoko South-West Constituency I, PDP) said the deliberation was urgent and important.

Mr Daodu added that the security architecture was gradually collapsing and must be looked into and rescued. He said it was worrisome that farmers on their farmland could be killed while providing food to revamp the economy.

Christopher Ogunlana (Irele-APC) demanded rejigging Amotekun and fishing out the killer herdsmen.

Mr Ogunlana called for proper synergy between security agencies to check the excess of herdsmen.

Rotimi Abitogun (Akure South Constituency II/ APC) said insecurity was a serious issue that called for concern from all stakeholders, urging the government to be proactive.

Fatai Atere (Akoko North-West/APC) said all motorcycles in Ondo should be duly registered to curb crime, adding that security agents should be stationed at flashy points.

Alao Olatunji Oshati (Ose Constituency-APC) called for effective local government administration to establish vigilante groups that could serve as local police in addressing insecurity.

The parliament also passed a bill to amend the Ondo State House of Assembly Service Commission Law 2021.
