A traditionalist, Jelili Atiku, has urged the Federal Government to recognise indigenous communities by declaring a public holiday in their honour during celebrations of their religious beliefs.

Mr Atiku, a performance artist and sculptor, spoke during an interview on Wednesday in Lagos, while reacting to the Isese Day celebration.

He noted that such recognition would uphold the dignity of indigenous peoples, strengthen national consciousness and promote inclusion and cultural dignity.

The internationally acclaimed artist, known for fusing Yoruba spiritual traditions with contemporary political critique, noted that many indigenous communities, particularly those in rural and archipelagic areas, remained marginalised, despite their rich cultural heritage.

He said, “Most times, during federal activities, prayers are offered in Islam or Christianity. These are foreign religions, not our indigenous prayers. Declaring a public holiday for the indigenous people of Nigeria would be the best step forward. If the Federal Government does this, it will send a clear signal that we are truly decolonising ourselves. At present, only Lagos, Oyo and Ogun srates have declared such a holiday.”

Mr Atiku stated that indigenous traditions were deeply spiritual and that communities often sought survival and protection through prayers rooted in their own culture.

“We often speak on their behalf to ensure conservation, as these communities are usually very poor,” he said.

He noted that a public holiday would not only give visibility to indigenous worshippers but also promote unity, build trust and strengthen the collective identity of Nigerians.

“Declaring a public holiday for the indigenous people of Nigeria is a good thing. It would be a bold step. If we fail to do the right thing, it sends a negative signal that we do not trust our people or ourselves,” Mr Atiku said.

He described the step as a ‘cleansing of the darkness,’ adding that it would help communities realise the value and meaning of their lives and traditions within the Nigerian context.

He added that people would appreciate the value more when they observed the sacred day at home, as indigenous practitioners do.

“It is a step-by-step process, but it will undoubtedly enhance the integrity of indigenous peoples in Nigeria,” he added.

Mr Atiku, known for provocative performances such as Ejìwàrò: The Unearthly and Festival of the Earth, showcased at international venues including the Venice Biennale, continued to use his art as a platform to amplify marginalised voices.

Through his work, he emphasised the importance of embracing Nigeria’s indigenous heritage as a vital force for social cohesion and national progress.
