The Italian Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of parliament, has cleared the way for further military aid to Ukraine by a large majority.

In the chamber, 218 members voted in favour, on Thursday, of allowing the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to provide Kyiv with further goods and equipment.

Forty-two people voted against it.

The fear that Italy, a NATO member, would not be a reliable ally of Ukraine under Meloni’s leadership has not borne out.

Her three-party coalition government took power in October 2022.

Members of the Lega party of Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also voted in favour of the decree.

Lega lawmaker Paolo Formentini said, “We cannot give up on Ukraine. We will not allow the autocracies to destroy our future.”

He called for more efforts in finding a solution at the negotiating table.
