The Jigawa government has set up mobile courts in five emirate councils of the state to prosecute violators of its monthly sanitation law.

The sanitation law demands that residents clean their homes and neighbourhoods every last Saturday of the month.

Speaking with reporters in Dutse on Saturday, Nura Ibrahim, the state Commissioner for Environment, said the courts would ensure the proper enforcement of the law.

Mr Ibrahim said that every last Saturday of the month, movements for economic and social activities will be restricted between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

The commissioner reiterated the commitment of the ministry to ensure the proper enforcement of the law to enhance the good environment and public health in the state.

“Upholding the culture of personal and environmental hygiene is one of the most effective and sustainable precautionary measures against the spread of diseases and promotion of public health.

“During these hours, people are expected to engage in cleaning their environment to keep Jigawa State Clean, and for anyone found violating the order, there are mobile courts established to try offenders.

“All the 27 local government areas of the state are directed to mobilise community organisations, self-help groups and the general public to join the exercise while all necessary support will be given by the state government to achieve the desired goals,” the commissioner said.

He added that the mobile courts were in Dutse, Hadejia, Kazaure, Gumel and Ringim.

Earlier, Governor Umar Namadi, who led members of the state executive, lawmakers, civil servants and political appointees to the monthly sanitation on Saturday in Dutse, the state capital, and its environs, noted that the gesture is aimed at promoting personal and environmental hygiene.

Mr Namadi, therefore, directed the ministry, judiciary, and security agencies to ensure maximum enforcement of the monthly sanitation exercise.
