French President Emmanuel Macron has won reelection, defeating archrival Marine Le Pen

The result of the run off polls was announced on Sunday.

Mr Macron scored 58.2 per cent of the votes while Ms Le Pen got 41.8 per cent.

Despite the historic low voter turn out at 28%, Mr Macron’s “clear victory” was an important win against the “far right”, says French European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune.

“This is a clear victory, the first time in the history of the Fifth Republic that a president has been re-elected when he also has a majority in parliament,” Mr Beaune said. “It’s important, it’s very important, because this was a political combat, a political combat against the far right.”
