Legendary Brazilian footballer, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele is dead.

He was 82.

Pele died on Thursday after days in intensive care, the UK Mirror reports.

The three-time World Cup winner had been undergoing treatment for medical complications including colon cancer and respiratory infection at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Pele, considered the first global football breakout star, made his international debut at the age of 16 and announced himself to a global audience in 1958, when, still only 17, scored six goals in four games as Brazil won the World Cup for the first time.
