Juventus booted out of UEFA Conference League; Chelsea fined €10m for breaking FFP rules
Europe’s football governing body UEFA kicked Juventus out of the 2023/24 UEFA Conference League and also fined the Italian club for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
The club was fined £17.14 million and will only pay half of the fine now but will not pay the remaining half if their financial records for the next three years comply with regulations.
During the past season, Juventus were docked an initial 15-point by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for breaching financial regulations concerning salary payments but that was overturned by Italy’s highest court.
Football bans were also issued to key figures in the club, including former vice-chair, Pavel Nedved and sporting director, Fabio Paratici.
In the latter stage of the season, a new 10-point deduction penalty was imposed on Juventus, which ultimately stood and consequently saw the club drop out of the Champions League spot to the Conference League.
The club president, Gianluca Ferrero, said the club accepted UEFA’s decision and would not be challenging it.
“We regret the decision of the Uefa. We do not share the interpretation that has been given of our defence, and we remain firmly convinced of the legitimacy of our actions and the validity of our arguments,” said Mr Ferrero.
“However, we have decided not to appeal this judgement.
“Lodging an appeal, possibly to other levels of judgement, with uncertain outcomes and timing, would increase the uncertainty with respect to our eventual participation in the 2024/25 Uefa Champions League,” he added.
Also, Premier League side Chelsea were fined by UEFA in one of those decisions handed out today. The financial breaches happened under former owner Roman Abramovich, but Chelsea have agreed to a €10 million fixed settlement with UEFA.
“Chelsea has fully cooperated and assisted UEFA with its investigation of these matters and, following an analysis by the UEFA Club Financial Control Body,” the club statement read.
The statement added: “The club has entered into a settlement agreement with UEFA. Under that settlement, the club is to pay a financial contribution of €10 million to UEFA as a fixed payment.”
