Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo joins Liverpool on loan

The Reds moved to bolster their midfield options on transfer deadline day with the acquisition of the 26-year-old Arthur Melo.

English Premier League club Liverpool have announced the deadline-day signing of Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo from Juventus on a season-long loan deal until the end of the 2022/2023 season.

The former Barcelona player arrived in England to complete the transfer on Thursday evening and subsequently passed his medical at the AXA Training Centre.

“Liverpool Football Club can confirm the signing of Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus for the remainder of the 2022-23 season, subject to international clearance,” the statement on the club’s website on Thursday night.

It added, “The Reds have moved to bolster their midfield options on transfer deadline day with the acquisition of the 26-year-old, who finalised the move at the AXA Training Centre on Thursday.”

Arthur arrived after two seasons with Juve, where he made 63 appearances and scored one goal after signing from FC Barcelona in September 2020.

Arthur, who was deemed surplus to requirement at Juventus, will hope to fill the void left by the trio of Thiago Alcântara, Diogo Jota, and Naby Keita, currently sidelined due to injuries.

“I’m really, really happy to be here wearing this great shirt with this famous badge that represents so much in world football. It’s a dream,” said Arthur of his move to Liverpool. “We talked a lot, and our ideas and visions were a good fit, so I’m sure it was the right choice. I’m really happy and highly motivated to continue living my dream on the pitch and giving my all in a Liverpool shirt.”

The 26-year-old started his senior career at Brazilian club Grêmio before moving to Barcelona in 2018 and won the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup during his two-year stint at Camp Nou.
