A 45-year-old man, Danladi Usman, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a woman of N4 million.
The defendant, who resides at Airport Road, Kaduna, is being charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the complainant, Jamila Bala, reported the matter at the police station on May 4.
Mr Leo said that sometime in October 2023, the defendant introduced himself to the complaint as a land agent and assured her of facilitating the acquisition of land along the Airport Road
He said that Mr Usman fraudulently collected N2.5 million from the complainant through his Guaranty Trust Bank account.
“Usman also collected N500,000 cash from the complainant, while another N1 million was paid into his First Bank account. The defendant received a total of N4 million from the complainant and promised to hand over the original documents of the land to her. He refused to give the original documents to the complainant after collecting the money,” he said.
Mr Leo said the offences were in contravention of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety who must be a civil servant on Grade Level 12, residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
Mr Emmanuel further ordered that the documents presented by the surety must be verified by the prosecutor.
He adjourned the matter until June 22 for hearing.
