The Kaduna State government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Basscomm Nigeria Limited and Energy Power Limited to provide solar power to its civil servants.

This is in the state government’s bid to provide a clean and affordable alternative source of electric power under its solar-for-all programme.

This is contained in a statement by Governor Uba Sani’s chief press secretary, Muhammad Shehu, on Wednesday in Kaduna.

According to Mr Shehu, the state commissioner for finance, Shizzer Bada, represented Mr Sani during the signing of the MoU.

He stated that the initiative was in line with Mr Sani’s pro-people style of governance and commitment to seeking climate-friendly sources of energy in the face of environmental challenges.

“In the SDGs, the provision of clean energy is a key factor in development. The Solar-For-All Programme is a brilliant initiative of the Kaduna Power Supply Company to make life easier for our dedicated civil servants.

“It is our hope that we can expand this initiative to other residents as well, as it is all about accessibility to affordable energy,” the commissioner stated.

Mr Shehu quoted Mr Bada as adding that Nigeria has been blessed with excess solar power yet to be tapped into.

He said, “It is time that we look at renewable energy due to climate change.”

The solar-for-all programme aims to cater to over 70,000 public servants in the Kaduna State Civil Service.

Under the programme, eligible workers can purchase high-quality solar systems for their homes, small businesses or farms at stipulated rates with a payment plan of three years.

The solar systems will be installed safely by certified solar energy providers to ensure compliance with international best practices and standards.
