The governments of Sokoto and Kebbi states have reactivated emergency response centres to ensure timely intervention in case of any outbreak of cholera and other diseases in the states.

There is no recorded cholera case in the two states.

The Kebbi State Commissioner for Health, Musa Isma’il, said in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, that the ministry had not received any cholera outbreak officially in the state.

Mr Isma’il explained that in spite of the fact that though there was no recorded cholera case so far, the state government had deployed health officials to go round the villages to sensitise people to preventive measures.

He added, “Our officials are now moving from villages to towns to sensitise people to how to stay healthy, and drink potable water so that they would not contract cholera. Emergency response centres have been reactivated with consumables, medications and other supplements to timely respond to unforeseen circumstances.”

Also, the Commissioner for Environment in Kebbi, Musa Tungulawa, said “government has reintroduced monthly sanitation to prevent diseases, ensure safe, hygienic and clean environment in the state.

“Clean environment, hygienic and clean drinking water are highly necessary to the well-being of people to reduce both airborne and waterborne diseases. We have been educating people on why they should be careful about sources of water now that the rainy season has commenced.’’

In Sokoto, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Abubakar Ahmad, said that the ministry had already taken measures for prompt response in case of any eventuality.

Mr Ahmad said that at present there was no official recorded cholera case in the state, stressing that “because of eventualities that happened in other states, emergency response centres have been reactivated.”

The permanent secretary enjoined people to ensure personal and environmental hygiene, especially during the rainy season.

He cautioned the people against exposing themselves to dangers and hazards through drinking and eating contaminated foods and living in unclean surroundings.
