Nelly Cheboi, the founder of TechLit Africa, an education technology startup, has been named CNN’s 2022 Hero of the Year.

Ms Cheboi, a native of Kenya, was honoured for her efforts in providing computer training for rural Kenyan schoolchildren through her non-profit TechLit Africa.

She was recognised as the top winner out of ten people nominated for the award in an online poll conducted by the media organisation.

Currently serving 10 schools, Ms Cheboi’s TechLit Africa plans to expand to 100 more in a year.

Her students can participate in distance learning in addition to daily lessons in various computer skills, including coding.

The TechLit founder explained that the concept was developed to empower young Kenyans without any idea of a computer.

Ms Cheboi took an interest in computer science while attending Augustana College in Illinois on a full scholarship.
