The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and its governorship candidate in Kogi state, Abdullahi Bayawo, have rejected the judgement of the Kogi state governorship election petition tribunal, delivered on Monday.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Mr Bayawo said they are heading to the Court of Appeal, Abuja, to overturn the dismissal of their petition by the tribunal

The statement read, “The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and its governorship candidate in Kogi State, Dr. Abdullahi Y. Bayawo, have rejected and appealed the judgement of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal of Kogi State delivered on Monday, 27th May, 2024.

“In a 15-ground appeal, the PRP and its candidate are seeking to overturn the tribunal’s decision which dismissed their petition challenging the election of Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he explained.

The PRP candidate said the tribunal made several errors in its judgement, “including the failure to consider critical evidence and the misdirection of law,” hence the reason for their appeal.

Part of the tribunal’s findings on the case which the PRP candidate said he was dissatisfied about include, “pre-filling of INEC forms, use of non-authentic and irregular voters’ registers, and the failure to comply with the constitutional requirement of a winner scoring 25% in at least 2/3 of the local government areas.”

He said their appeal in Abuja, “will seek to set aside the tribunal’s decision and ensure that justice is served in the governorship election petition.”

Expressing their commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring that the will of the people is respected in the state, the PRP and its candidate said they are confident that the appeal is an opportunity to ensure that the true winner of the election is declared.
