Lagos CP warns officers against extortion, rights abuses, phone checks on roads

The Lagos State commissioner of police, Olohundare Jimoh, has warned officers against extortion, harassment, and human rights abuses.
Mr Jimoh urged them to uphold citizens’ dignity in carrying out their duties.
He gave the advice during a strategic meeting with area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical commanders to review officers’ conduct and other operational issues within the state.
According to a statement by the police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on Friday, the CP also frowned at unprofessional practices, including name-calling and intimidation of youths.
He reminded officers of their obligation to uphold the law and treat Nigerians with fairness.
The commissioner specifically prohibited the practice of stopping young people to check their mobile phones on the road, describing it as unlawful, except in cases where such devices were confirmed to be exhibits in an ongoing investigation.
According to him, such procedures must only be carried out within police stations and strictly in line with legal provisions.
Highlighting the command’s recent achievements, Mr Jimoh said a major significant success was the arrest of a suspect popularly known as ‘Shameleon’, linked with murder and assaults.
“Another one is a leader of notorious vehicle vandals, who disguised himself as security personnel to gain access to estates to steal.
“Also, an ex-convict was arrested in connection with the armed robbery and attempted murder of a victim and stole his gold jewelry worth millions of naira,” Mr Jimoh said.
The police boss said the apprehensions underscored the command’s determination to rid Lagos of criminal elements and safeguard lives and property.
The CP also urged residents to support the ongoing efforts by providing credible information to the police, assuring them of the command’s commitment to security across the state.
