The Lagos Division of the Federal High Court has sentenced a 27-year-old man, Joseph David, to 100 hours of community service for drug trafficking.

The convict was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke on a one-count charge of drug trafficking.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

After his plea, the prosecutor, M I Erondu, reviewed the facts of the case before the court and tendered several documents as evidence.

The evidence was admitted by the court and marked as exhibits, respectively.

The prosecutor then urged the court to proceed and convict the defendant based on his plea and evidence tendered by the prosecution.

Delivering judgment, Mr Aneke found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment.

Before the sentence, the defence urged the court to show mercy on the defendant for being a first offender, adding that he would turn a new leaf.

Consequently, the court sentenced the convict to a term of six months imprisonment, with an option of a N150,000 fine.

The court also ordered the convict to engage in community service for 100 hours.

In the charge, the defendant was said to have committed the offence on Oct. 14, 2023, at Viju milk company Oba Akran Ikeja.

The prosecutor said that he unlawfully dealt in 197g of cannabis sativa, a drug similar to cocaine and other psychotropic substances restricted by law.

The offence contravenes the provision of section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act Cap N20 Law of the Federation 2004.
