The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency (LSMTL) is collaborating with the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of building material testing processes.

The general manager, LSMTL, Olayinka Abdul, said this in a statement issued by Salehu-Badejo, head, public affairs unit of the agency, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Addressing the management team of the agency, Ms Abdul said the partnership was crucial to safeguard citizens in the state.

This, she said, would ensure that buildings were constructed and maintained using high-quality materials and sound engineering practices.

She said: “LSMTL is the laboratory scientist of the building industry that performs scientific tests on structures using construction samples from sites in order to identify the durability of such structures in line with the building standards of Lagos State.

“Upon completion of such tests, a structural engineer is expected to interpret its condition based on results from LSMTL.

“The structural engineer studies the results and compares them with the building plan to interpose on the best move to avert disaster.”

She highlighted the impact of environmental challenges like soil salinity and instability on building structures, emphasising the need for careful testing and analysis.

Ms Abdul expressed the agency’s commitment to enhancing its testing procedures to provide better service to the construction industry and ensure the safety of existing buildings.

Ms Abdul also quoted the managing director, LSDPC, Ayodeji Joseph, as saying that both parties should commit to honesty and fairness in their working relationship.

He also called for a strong, fair, and transparent partnership between the LSDPC and the LSMTL, built on a foundation of integrity and mutual respect.
