Lagos moves to redesign Obalende Underbridge

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it will redesign its Obalende Underbridge toward making the environment clean and sustainable.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the assurance while speaking with journalists after an inspection tour of Obalende and environs.
“We were at Obalende sometime in 2024, towards the end of the year, to assess and clean out and clear out Obalende.
“Now, we have to go there again, as we want to finally and formally hand over the space to one of the biggest corporates, which is taking up the space for corporate social responsibility (CSR).
“It will be redesigned; they will clean it in an environmentally sustainable manner, so the handover process is going to start today,” he said.
According to him, the approval has been given since 2024 by the state government but there was a delay because of the design.
He noted, “The delay was because we had to do a lot of back and forth with the corporate with respect to an environmentally sustainable design that is suitable for them for CSR and for us as a government.
“They will also be the ones who will maintain the place afterwards. Normally, it is supposed to be a garage. The garage will still be part of the design that is coming up; then, there will be public toilets.”
He added that the design would accommodate sleeping bays.
He stated, “We just want to redesign it and make it habitable and functional for a 21st-century economy and a state such as Lagos. Once we hand it over, we can start following up, and we are going to share it with the media – the design that is coming up – so you can see it yourselves.”
The commissioner disclosed that Lagos Island Local Government also came up with a design for the Oja Oba Underbridge.
“Spaces such as these should be put to proper use. The one at Osborne is being used now for football,” he said.
