The Premier League game between Bournemouth and Luton Town has been declared abandoned by the league after Luton captain Tom Lockyer collapsed in the 65th minute of the match at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

“The Premier League match between Bournemouth and Luton has been abandoned due to a player medical incident,” the league said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today’s match,” it added.

Lockyer, 29, suddenly fell on the pitch while play was on, with the medical team of both clubs sprinting to the field to take control of the situation. Immediately, players from both sides went into a visibly sober mood.

It was the second time Lockyer had collapsed this year.

In May, the Wales international collapsed during the Championship promotion playoff win game against Coventry City at the Wembley Stadium but fully recovered to continue playing.

Meanwhile, Luton has announced that the player is now responsive and has been taken to the hospital for further treatment but said they do not know the extent of the incident.

“We all hope and pray for our leader and captain Tom Lockyer, who is thankfully responsive and has been taken to hospital,” the club statement said.

“We don’t know the full extent of what happened and what the next steps are at this stage, but we thank Bournemouth and the medical staff on both sides for their immediate response, which was absolutely amazing.”
