A man injured seven people with a knife at a refugee centre in East Berlin, police said on Wednesday.

Among the injured in the Tuesday evening incident in Berlin’s Marzahn district was a 15-year-old, a security guard and a visitor at the centre.

Paramedics and emergency doctors treated the victims for cuts and stab wounds at the scene and then took them to hospital.

None of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

The suspected perpetrator, a 21-year-old Algerian, was also injured.

He is in custody and the motive for the attack remains unclear, a police spokeswoman said.

The injured security guard and the visitor are German citizens, the other five injured are from Moldova.
