In a historic election featuring women as candidates of leading political parties, Mexicans will on Sunday go to the polls to elect a first female president, federal lawmakers and local officials.

Mexicans will choose between the two leading candidates, Claudia Sheinbaum of ruling Morena party and Xóchitl Gálvez of National Action Party or PAN party.

Mrs Sheinbaum, 61, is running to succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, founder of the Morena party, promising to continue his policies and programmes.

A former senator, Mrs Gálvez of National Action Party, is representing a coalition of opposition party and pushing to defeat incumbent Morena party.

Whoever wins between the two contestants will serve a six-year term in office and make history as the first female president in Mexico amid global clamour for women inclusion in politics and governance.

The June 2 general elections will also see Mexicans elect 628 federal lawmakers: 128 members of the Senate and 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies.

At the state level, eight elected governors will serve a six-year term in office and head of government for Mexico City, deputies for 31 states and officials for 1,580 municipalities will also be elected.
