The Brave Warriors of Namibia acted according to their name as they stunned the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia 1-0 in the opening Group E at Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium to record their first-ever African Cup of Nations win.

Deon Hotto’s late header from close range, courtesy of a cross from Bethuel Muzeu’s cross, was enough for Namibia to claim an unexpected victory against one-time champions Algeria on Tuesday.

In the stoppage time, Namibia scored a second goal in the interesting encounter, but it was ruled out for offside as they fearlessly attacked Tunisia’s half throughout the match.

Tunisia had the most possession in the game, but they could not convert that to attacking threats as Namibia had the most total shots (13) in the game with six on target compared to Tunisia’s 10 total shots, with four of those being on target.

Coming into the game, Namibia had never won an AFCON game in the country’s history, with two draws and seven defeats in their previous nine attempts, but in the 2023 tournament, they are sitting at the top of their group.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bertrand Traore scored a late penalty as Burkina Faso scored a last-minute winner against Mauritania in a Group D fixture to move up the group.

The game was heading to a goalless draw until a late challenge by Nouh El Abd on Issa Kabore, who was through on goal, the course of the game, gave the Burkinabes the three points.
