Security has been tightened in most parts of Kuje communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following the takeover of the Kuje Correctional Centre by Boko Haram fighters on Tuesday night.

A correspondent, who went around the area, observed heavy security presence with fierce-looking armed operatives in areas considered flashpoints.

Armoured tanks were positioned around Kuje Prison junction as security operatives patrolled the vicinity.

The police, in conjunction with other security operatives, cordoned off roads leading to the prison and also restricted movements in the area.

Police helicopters were also sighted hovering above.

Banks and some schools were not opened due to the tension in the area.

Other security agents are also on red alert to forestall any breach of peace.

Sporadic gunshots and bomb blasts were heard at the prison after Boko Haram fighters stormed the facility.

Residents leaving close to the area said the heavy gunshots which started at about 10:00 p.m. lasted about an hour.
