The National Inland Waterways Authority on Friday expressed condolences to the Bayelsa Government and the families of victims of the boat accident.

This is contained in a statement by NIWA AGM Corporate Affairs, Suleiman Makama in Lokoja.

NIWA described the boat accident as “sad and unfortunate.”

The boat accident which occurred on Wednesday at Ezetu I River, Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State, reportedly claimed 20 lives.

The ill-fated boat, popularly called ‘Denghe market Boat’ is a long big boat that sailed on Monday and moved from community to community picking traders to arrive in Yenagoa.

“We share in the pain of the deceased families and the state government over the boat accident that occurred on Wednesday, near Ezetu 1 community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The incident was unfortunately caused by an engine default explosion, which resulted in the loss of several lives among passengers and crew members. NIWA stands in solidarity with the government of Bayelsa State and the bereaved families during this difficult time, and we offer our prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed,” Mr Makama said.

Mr Makama explained that in response to a distress call, NIWA promptly mobilised its search and rescue team to the scene to investigate the root cause of the accident and provide updates to the public as necessary.

He reiterated the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations for both boat operators and passengers.

According to him, it is mandatory for individuals using the inland waterways to wear life jackets at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.

“We therefore urge all stakeholders in the maritime sector to prioritise safety measures and compliance with regulations to prevent future tragedies on the waterways,” he said.
