NLC urges proactive action for progress in 2026

The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged governments at all levels to prioritise accountability, stewardship, responsiveness, social justice, and improved security in 2026.
NLC chairwoman in Lagos, Funmi Sesi, gave the advice on Wednesday during an interview.
She said that sustained measures to enhance the welfare of Nigerians would ease the burden on workers and citizens in the new year.
The chairperson appealed to the government to take proactive steps in the new year to tackle the spate of insecurity in the country, protect lives and property, and ensure the free flow of economic activities.
On social justice, Ms Sesi underscored the need for increased quality healthcare and education.
She urged the government to increase budgetary allocations for health, education, and security as critical sectors.
The NLC chairwoman also spoke on the need for tax justice, urging that taxation that affects the poor should be discouraged.
In her outlook for 2026, she said workers anticipate a reduction in the cost of goods and services, especially food. She noted that this can be achieved by deliberate support to farmers to boost agricultural production.
Moreso, Ms Sesi noted that the new minimum wage expected in the year should be negotiated fairly, to reflect the true living wages of workers.
The NLC ultimately harped on the need for a secure nation, with affordable basic amenities to uplift living standards.
She also urged prioritising the rights, freedoms, and happiness of citizens to stem the tide of migration.
