NMC gets new acting chief executive

Education Tunji Alausa has approved the appointment of Benjamin Oyelami as acting director/chief executive of the National Mathematical Centre, Sheda, Abuja.

Education Tunji Alausa has approved the appointment of Benjamin Oyelami as acting director/chief executive of the National Mathematical Centre, Sheda, Abuja.

A statement by Onyekachi Njoku, controller of information and public relations of the centre, said the appointment takes immediate effect.

Mr Njoku said the approval followed the appointment of the former director/chief executive, Promise Mebine, as vice-chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa.

According to him, a letter conveying the approval was signed by the director of University Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Rakiya Ilyasu.

He described Mr Oyelami as a professor of mathematics who joined the centre over 20 years ago from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

He also said Mr Oyelami had served as the coordinator of the mathematics and theoretical physics programmes at different times at the centre.

Mr Njoku added that the new CEO of the national mathematical centre studied at the University of Jos and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

He said Mr Oyelami graduated with a second-class upper degree in mathematics and obtained MSc and PhD degrees in the same field.

He noted that he had published widely in national and international journals.

According to him, the new acting CEO was a deputy director and academic planning coordinator before his appointment.

”His appointment is expected to strengthen the centre’s mission to promote excellence in research, innovation, teaching, learning and capacity building in mathematics and the mathematical sciences for national development,” he added.
