NSCDC nabs four over vandalism, illegal mining in Akwa Ibom

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) command in Akwa Ibom, has apprehended two persons over alleged conspiracy and vandalism in the state.

The state commandant, Eluyemi Eluwade, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Uyo.

He said that two of the suspects were nabbed on Aug. 25, over alleged vandalism of power transmission lines in Ikot Akpan Okop, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

“The suspects have already confessed to the vandalism of the transmission lines, they had the intent to sell them as scraps,” he said.

Mr Eluwade said that another two suspects were arrested at on Aug. 26, while conveying 1,200 bags of the solid minerals in a long open truck with Registration Number: TYN 157 XA.

He said that the solid minerals suspected to be iron ore, were allegedly mined from Ibeno Beach area, and were being conveyed to Port Harcourt.

“NSCDC operatives received intelligence reports on the alleged illegal mining activity, and quickly mobilised towards the mining site.

“The truck was accosted at Eket. The driver and another suspect were arrested over their failure to provide mining licence and genuine waybill for the items,” he said.

Mr Eluwade said that the command was fully committed to the campaign against sabotage and vandalism of public assets in the state.

“It is quite unfortunate that some youths still engage in the barbaric act of vandalism of public utilities,” he said.
