A coalition of accredited domestic election observer groups has lauded the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s Yobe East by-election.

The coalition team leader, Victor Kalu, stated this when addressing journalists on Sunday in Damaturu.

He said after the successful observation of the entire election, the observers were convinced that the process was credible.

“We conclude by stating very categorically that the Yobe East Senatorial District bye-election of Feb 3 2024 actually took place as scheduled under a very peaceful and calm atmosphere,” he said.

The exercise was transparent, credible, free and fair in line with democratic tenets of elections.

“We therefore adjudge it to have met the international best practices for democratic election. The results of the election should therefore be accepted by all as a true reflection of the majority of voters in the state,” Mr Kalu said.

He urged the winner to reach out to all segments of society and show magnanimity in victory.

He also appealed to those who lost in the election to show a good spirit of sportsmanship, which according to him was the beauty of democracy.

He commended people of Yobe East for trooping out en masse to elect a candidate of their choice without any harassment or intimidation.
