The Ogun House of Assembly has approved Gov. Dapo Abiodun’s request to appoint 20 special advisers.

The Assembly gave the approval on Tuesday during an executive session held at the assembly complex in Abeokuta.

The Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, had read the governor’s letter dated June 5 during the executive session, requesting approval.

In their contributions, Abayomi Fasuwa, Ademuyiwa Adeyemi, Kemi Oduwole and Yusuf Adejojo, noted that the approval would assist the governor in the smooth running of the state.

They noted that the governor could not afford to run the government alone without the support of professionals.

Responding, Mr Oluomo said it was important for the governor to keep the engine of government running, hence the need for immediate appointment of special advisers.

The Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, moved the motion that the governor’s request should be approved by the House and seconded by Atinuke Bello.

Also at the executive session, the speaker appealed to the staff of the assembly currently on industrial action to call off the strike.

“The government is looking at their case. They should give opportunity for both parties to dialogue. It is important to sit at a round table to resolve the differences,” Mr Oluomo said.

Under the aegis of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), workers in the assembly had on June 1, embarked on an indefinite strike.

The workers are demanding the immediate implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS) by the government.

19 out of the 26 lawmakers were in attendance at the special executive session.
