Former Germany midfielder Mesut Özil has left Fenerbahce as the Turkish club said his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Özil, 33, joined Fenerbahce last year from England’s Arsenal but was suspended from the squad in March. He said last month he still wanted to fulfil his contract until 2024.

Fenerbahce did not disclose why the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner was suspended.

Club president Ali Koc had said in November that Özil should concentrate on football and not on his business activities.

Fenerbahce said in the statement they wished Özil all the best for the rest of his career amid speculation he could join the 2020 Turkish champions Basaksehir.
