Pakistan renews call for UN-backed plebiscite on Kashmir

The envoy reiterated Pakistan’s firm stand with the Kashmir people and would continue to provide unwavering diplomatic support to them.

• February 5, 2024

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has again called on the international community to prevail on the Indian Government to allow the people of Kashmir and Jammu to determine their quest for statehood through a plebiscite.

The Pakistan high commissioner in Nigeria, Sohail Khan, said this on Monday at a ceremony held in Abuja at the high commission to mark the Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed annually on February 5.

Mr Khan noted the plebiscite was in accordance with numerous resolutions of the United Nations, which he alleged had been ignored by the Indian government.

According to him, multiple United Nations resolutions unambiguously declare that the final disposition of Jammu and Kashmir will be made in accordance with the will of the people.

The envoy reiterated Pakistan’s firm stand with the Kashmir people and would continue to provide unwavering diplomatic support to them.

Mr Khan, therefore, urged the international community, including the UN and its relevant human rights machinery, civil society organisations, media, and others, to fulfil their obligations by ensuring that the people of Kashmir determine their future through the democratic process.

Kashmir Solidarity Day focuses on showing Pakistan’s support and unity with the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir.

The day also focuses on their ongoing freedom struggle to pay homage to Kashmiri martyrs who lost their lives fighting for Kashmir’s freedom.
