Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday said that Palestine supported the security and stability of Iraq and called on Iraqi political parties to prioritise dialogue.

“I call on the Iraqi political parties to give priority to the language of dialogue to achieve stability, security, and prosperity for the Iraqis, away from the internal fighting that claimed the lives of dozens of Iraqis,” he said.

Four rockets were fired on the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad overnight and in the morning after Shiite cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, resigned from politics.

The situation sparked protests by his supporters. According to the Iraqi military on Tuesday, twenty-two people were killed, and more than 200 were injured.

Mr Abbas stressed that Palestine’s leadership and people stand by Iraq’s president, government and people.

“There is a strong fraternal and historical relationship between Palestine and Iraq,” Mr Abbas added. “The stability and prosperity of Iraq contribute to supporting the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their national cause.”
