Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State says his administration has purchased assorted grains worth about N1.6 billion for distribution to residents as part of the palliative measures adopted by the state government.

The grains included millet, maize and rice.

A statement by the governor’s press secretary, Bature Tofa, on Thursday, said the governor disclosed this shortly before the weekly executive council meeting at the Government House in Kano.

The governor said the items purchased were in addition to the five trucks of rice donated by the federal government to the state, assuring that modalities had already been designed to ensure that the items reached the vulnerable people in the society.

However, he called on the federal government to review its palliatives allocation formula to allow for more allocation to Kano, the state with the country’s highest population.

The governor expressed his administration’s displeasure with the hardship people of the state were facing due to the removal of fuel subsidy.

Mr Yusuf commended President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives on palliatives, noting that the measure will help cushion the people’s suffering.

He said the state government was working out a plan to provide cows, sheep and goats to empower women, especially those in the rural areas, for self-reliance and economic prosperity.

The governor also called on civil servants in the state to be punctual and remain committed to their duties, saying the present administration will not condone truancy and negligence.
