Despite winning the same number of 40 gold medals, the United States pipped China in the final medals table of the 2024 Paris Olympics on the final day, with the Americans leapfrogging the Chinese with the most silver and bronze won.

Nigeria had a mediocre showing at the Paris Olympics.

“Team Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” said the country’s sports minister John Enoh. “Where the country did not secure any medals does not entail being addressed just by our participation at the Olympics, but it is a product of very many other things that need immediate attention.”

The U.S. women’s basketball team ensured the country finished atop of the medal table following a slim 67-66 points win over the hosts France to clinch their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal as it put them on the same number of gold medals as China on the final day of the tournament.

On the overall medal count, the U.S. contingent won the most medals at the Paris Games with 126, including 40 gold medals, 44 silver medals and 42 bronze medals. The Chinese finished second with 91 medals (40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze).

Japan ranked third on the table with 20 gold medals, 12 silver and 13 bronze, totalling 45 medals. Australia won 53 medals (18 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze) to earn fourth place.

It was a sweet tournament for the hosts, France, as the country recorded its most successful outing in the history of the Olympics, winning 64 medals (16 gold, 26 silver and 22 bronze) to finish fifth. The Netherlands had its all-time haul of 34 medals to finish sixth.

The Dutch athletes won 15 gold, seven silver and 12 bronze.

Kenya finished as the highest-ranked African nation at the Paris Olympics. They won 11 medals (four gold, two silver, and five bronze) to claim 17th place on the table, followed by Algeria in 39th place with two gold medals and one bronze.

South Africa is in 44th place with six medals (one gold, three silver and two bronze). Ethiopia finished 47th overall with one gold medal and three silver medals.

Nigeria had a mediocre showing at the Paris Olympics.
