The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Imo has called for improved cooperation between civilians and military and paramilitary bodies.

The committee’s national chairman, Ibrahim Magaji, made the call at its 40th anniversary celebration in Owerri on Friday.

Mr Magaji, represented by the Abia PCRC chairman, Emma Nwosu, said that improved civil-military and paramilitary relations would improve the people’s trust in the country’s security agencies and aid the fight against the current security challenges.

He commended the Imo PCRC for its “undeterred efforts to prove to Imo people that the police is our friend“ in words and action.

The state chairman of the body, Chima Chukwunyere, advised the members and police officers to use their positions of authority to build relationships, regardless of their circumstances.

He further urged the members not to be intimidated into allowing influential Nigerians to hide under the cover of the police to trample on the rights of the common man.

According to him, the defence of the downtrodden and their constitutional rights will always be divinely rewarded.

“Whatever you do with your lives and positions is what you give an account of to God after your stay on earth,“ Mr Chukwunyere said.

Also, Lemy Akakem, chairman of the Imo PCRC Board of Trustees, described the anniversary as a significant event for the Imo PCRC.

He commended the state chairman for his commitment, describing him as “a gifted man whom God has brought to work, despite his advanced level in society.“

The Imo Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, represented by his deputy, Siraji Fana, commended the PCRC under Mr Chukwunyere’s leadership for its excellent performance since the start of his tenure in office.

Highlights of the event included the CP’s inauguration of a transit camp built by the PCRC at the Imo Police Command Headquarters, Owerri, and the presentation of merit awards to deserving police officers and members of the group.
