The Peruvian capital city of Lima has withdrawn as the host city of the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships due to circumstances beyond its control, World Athletics (WA) announced on Wednesday.

The world athletics governing body disclosed in a statement that the Peruvian Athletics Federation has informed it of events militating against its desire to host.

“The federation said recent political instability and social unrest, as well as natural disasters in Peru, have left it and the local organising committee (LOC) unable to stage the event next year,” World Athletics said.

The World Under-20 Championships were to be held in the South American city from August 26 to 31, 2024.

“We would like to thank the Peruvian Federation and the LOC for the extensive time and effort they have already dedicated to this event and for their ongoing commitment to global athletics,” it added.

World Athletics said it was already in discussion with a replacement host for next year’s event and would provide more information in due course.
